A Multi-Sensory Approach to Gardening

Hattie Ide Chaffee Garden Club, the first garden club in East Providence of the Rhode Island Federation of Garden Clubs makes a significant difference in the lives of the Home’s residents, by embracing and integrating Rhode Island’s horticultural community. As older adults age in place, they may be at an increased risk for physical and psychological problems, especially if they are experiencing social isolation, decreased levels of activity, and depression. Participating in gardening activities can help restore and improve mental and physical health and promote healing.

The creative expression of gardening can be very moving, especially when participants start to embrace their inner feelings, and as we participate in hands-on creative activities, we can gain a sense of accomplishment and start to open up in ways that can be powerfully stimulating and uplifting. When folks, regardless of age become interactive, they experience better social supports and an improvement in overall quality of life. Keeping busy and active can make a difference!

Hattie Ide Chaffee Garden Club, a milestone for our Home’s 77th year anniversary, brings a new way of living right to our residents’ doorsteps.
